Career Pathways

The Black Ink Project offers publishing as a career path for self-employed artists, writers and designers. This means a bright future for creative people, working in a team with good communications and cooperation.Preparation of books is an opportunity to learn new skills and to develop new ideas, with help always available from experienced staff.

This work is also suitable for Community Development Employment project (CDEP) and those people looking for work experience.

Black Ink Press are looking for Indigenous writers and illustrators. We have skilled writers and artists that are available to mentor new talent.

To develop your ideas, Black Ink Press will provide on-the-job training in skills that apply to publishing, but all applicants need to start with some basic competence in either storytelling, drawing or writing. It is also useful to have basic journalism skills such as reporting, interviewing, and photography.

If they create a good product, contributors will get royalties (a share of the price of every book sold) when the book is finally published. In the meantime, CDEP may provide a living allowance.

Black Ink Press is looking for skilled people who would like to work for CDEP and learn as they go:
• Graphic Designers/ Layout Artists who can turn stories and artwork into books, using modern computer programs and paper-and-pencil. What is required is a good sense of design.

• A promotion person to design and execute a marketing program.

• An Administrative Assistant to help with tasks such as invoicing, keeping records, filing, and organising meetings.

It is possible for Indigenous people who want to learn some skills to work alongside experienced workers.
